Spring 2012 Travel Team Commitment Statement
by posted 04/01/2012

TYL Travel Team Commitment for Boys at the Lightning (U-11), Junior (U-13) and Senior (U-15) Age Divisions

Participation on a TYL travel team requires enthusiasm, focus and 100% effort.

We expect that if you want to play on a travel team, you will attend all practices, Trumbull Youth Lacrosse League (TYLL) games as well as your travel team games.  In fairness to those players who do attend all practices and games, players who miss TYLL or travel practices or any games without good reason (school, religion, family or health) may lose playing time or their position on the team.

If a player accepts a spot on a team and demonstrates an inability or unwillingness to live up to the level of commitment required by the team, TYL reserves the right to move the player from that team to another.  In most circumstances, this usually results in a player moving to a lesser competitive team. All coaches value this commitment – if you and/or your son are not fully committed, please do not take a spot from a player who is.

If you want to play on a TYL travel team and you also play another spring sport, we expect that you will make lacrosse your PRIORITY sport this spring. Our expectation, on behalf of all boys and girls who want to play on travel teams, is that you will attend all lacrosse events if you are chosen for a travel team, even if there is a scheduling conflict with your other sport. Travel team players that need to miss a practice or game for good reason must email or call their coach prior to the practice or game they will miss.

Spring 2012, Trumbull Youth Lacrosse Boys Program Changes
by posted 02/28/2012

Trumbull Youth Lacrosse Spring 2012 Program Update

Effective Friday March 30th, lacrosse registration is closed.

The Spring 2012 season will bring a number of positive changes to Trumbull Youth Lacrosse (TYL).  ALL Lightning, Junior and Senior boys will play in the "Trumbull Youth Lacrosse League (TYLL).”  The TYLL will host practices on Wednesday or Thursday evenings with all games on Saturdays on the Trumbull High School turf.  This is unlike anything we have organized in the past!  Registration fees will be adjusted to accommodate the new format.

The new TYLL League will be divided into Division I and Division III. The TYLL League will not follow the traditional CONNY Lightning, Junior & Senior age brackets. TYLL Division I will consist of a mix of older, bigger Junior boys and all Senior boys. TYLL Division III will consist of a mix of all Lightning boys and younger, smaller Junior boys. Division placement will be determined by a blend of a player’s age, size and skill levels. For example, a smaller, younger Junior-age player who has not been playing very long will likely play in TYLL Division III.

Each TYLL team member, regardless of Division, will receive game shorts and a reversible pinnie.  These are no different than those that are given to our travel team participants.

All TYLL teams will be equally competitive and all games will be refereed by a certified official.  TYLL games will start on Saturday April 14th.  The TYLL is similar to Little League for those of you familiar with baseball.

Additionally, Trumbull Youth Lacrosse will field one or two travel teams at the Lightning (U-11), Junior (U-13) and Senior (U-15) boy’s levels, which will compete in the CONNY league. As in the past, registration numbers will determine the number of travel teams. Travel team selections will be determined through a series of skills assessments and controlled scrimmages during the first week of TYL practice. Travel team players will incur additional registration fees and time commitment beyond participating in the TYLL. Travel team players will have two additional practices per week with CONNY league games on Sundays and/or weekdays.  There will be no need to re-register if your child is selected to a travel team, we will send out PayPal invoices.

Practice days for both the TYLL and travel teams WILL NOT be determined until late March and are determined by coaches availability and field space.  You can count on a two day commitment to the TYLL and three additional days commitment if your child is selected to a travel team.

All Lightning, Junior and Senior boys are required to play in the Trumbull Youth  Lacrosse League (TYLL). Participation is not optional for those who are selected to a travel team.  Travel team players who miss TYLL games and/or practices will be subject to loss of playing time in CONNY league games or replaced with a player who is prepared to make the commitment to both teams.

The U-9 Bantam boys and will not participate in the TYLL.  They traditionally have practice twice a week with games on weekends.  Depending upon team size, the group may be divided into two teams for games only.  The U-7 Little Eagles will meet twice a week and not play games.
Online registration for the spring season will be opened in the coming week on our website.  You will receive several email reminders before registration closes in late march.

The girls program will continue as in previous years with a 3rd/4th grade Bantam Team, a 5th/6th grade Junior Team and a 7th/8th grade Senior Team.

New US Lacrosse/CONNY Age Eligibility Changes
by posted 01/20/2012

Effective this winter session and spring 2012, CONNY will adopt the new USLax boys and girls youth rules.

Of the rules issues, the most significant is USLax’s move of the age eligibility cutoff date from December 31 to August 31 preceding the season. There are three basic reasons for the change from December 31 to August 31 as the cutoff.

  1. The Aug 31 date is in line with most schools and allows kids who are on a traditional education track (not held back or pushed forward a grade) to participate in the same age division.  The Dec 31 date created a situation in which kids born between Sept 1 and Dec 31 were pushed into a different division from the rest of their classmates.

  2. This is the FIL standard and it is only logical that we maintain a single standard for lacrosse across the world.

  3. Traditionally people view the end of summer as the “close” of a competitive year in lacrosse and the fall as the beginning of a new competitive year.  The Aug 31 date matches well with this traditional standard.

Here’s a comparison of how 2012 would look under CONNY’s current December 31 cut-off and how it would look under the new August 31 cut-off date.

2012 Under Old Cutoff Date

2012 Under New Cutoff Date

           Birthdate

     Age Bracket

         Birthdate

 Born on or after 1/1/1997

         U15

Born on or after 9/1/1996 and    not in high school

 Born on or after 1/1/1999

         U13

Born on or after 9/1/1998,   or
      9/1/1998 to 8/31/2000

 Born on or after 1/1/2001

            U11

Born on or after 9/1/2000, or
     9/1/2000 to 8/31/2002

 Born on or after 1/1/2003

         U9

Born on or after 9/1/2002, or
     9/1/2002 to 8/31/2004

For the girls programs TYL has not decided to stay grade based of change to age based at this point.  We will keep you posted.

Travel Team Placemets and Tryout Phosophy

TYL Tryout Philosophy and Travel Team Placements

This applies to all boys at the lightning, junior & senior levels

In regards to spring team placements, our board and coaches, as part of the selection process, take into consideration a number of factors including: their experience in TYL, their commitment to prior teams, their skills assessment scores, age, grade, athleticism, maturity, interest/passion, eagerness, hustle, coachability, lacrosse knowledge, and of course child safety.  Ideally, no child should be "out of place" on the roster they've been assigned to. The goal is to place them onto “skill appropriate” teams to ensure they get the most from the season.  All travel team placements MUST fall within the new US Lacrosse & CONNY age guidelines.

One of the most asked questions is “Is it okay to miss an evaluation session or two because of prior sports commitments or family functions?”  Our simple answer is “for the best placement on a team, we strongly encourage you to attend all, or as many, evaluation sessions as possible.”

As a program, our goal is to place each player on the team they would benefit most from; and we reserve the right to move players from one roster to another during the season as appropriate.

We continue to emphasize that what team a child is placed on in youth lacrosse has little relevance to where he or she ends up at the high school level or college.  Developing stick skills, conditioning and hard work are more important than being on an “A” team.  Over the years we have seen many “B” team players make major contributions to their high school and college teams and some very talented “A” level players in 6th or 7th grade never grow beyond that level.  CONNY is full of successful NCAA champion players who failed to make their youth programs “A” teams. It’s also important to note that simply being on an “A” team but seeing little field time is nowhere near as important as being a leader on a “B” team and gaining the confidence that can only be had by playing with the appropriate skilled children.

There will be some players who will go from an “A” team one year to a “B” team the next as they move up to a new age division.  This is normal.  There are also children every year who are new to TYL who will make an A or B team over a player with some experience in TYL.

Ron Cristiano
by posted 05/09/2010

TYL Family,
As some of you are aware, Ron Cristiano passed away this past Sunday rather unexpectedly.  Ron was the founder of Trumbull Youth Lacrosse and served as our president until 2008.

Ron was a role model to me and it was his tireless effort that got Trumbull Youth Lacrosse off the ground when others who had previously tried, failed.  He started TYL before lacrosse was even a varsity sport at Trumbull High School or  St. Joe's.  At one point in 1999, he was told by the THS athletic director that we could not use his fields and that "lacrosse would exist, over his dead body."  Fortunately Ron didn't take no for an answer and as a result we have had well over a thousand children introduced to the sport in Trumbull.  Thanks to Ron, TYL has produced hundreds of varsity athletes, state champions as well as  NCAA champions.  More importantly, Ron has passed his passion for the sport onto others will go on to love and teach the game as we do now!

Peter Tinnesz
Current TYL President

Obituary: Ronald W. Cristiano Jr., age 51, of Trumbull, passed away November 13, 2011 at St. Vincent's Medical Center. Ron was born in Port Chester, NY, raised in Greenwich and was a longtime Trumbull resident. A graduate of Greenwich High School and the University of CT, he was Vice President/ General Manager of Tx Telecom Inc. of Manhattan, NY. Ron was a lacrosse enthusiast who was responsible for bringing the Youth Lacrosse Program to Trumbull. He spent countless hours on the field coaching and encouraging the players. Ron was an avid sports fan. He loved going to see games with his loved ones. Ron also enjoyed running, swimming and was very passionate about his garden. Ron loved to travel and just recently fulfilled his life long dream of going to Italy. He was a devoted father and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his cherished children Mark Cristiano and Annie Cristiano and their mother Cathy Cristiano; his mother Geraldine (Mollica) Cristiano; his sister June Canchoa; his niece Lauren Canchola and his longtime companion Lori Alcan all of Trumbull. He was recently predeceased by his father Ronald W. Cristiano Sr. Friends and family are invited to attend his funeral services on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Cyril F.
